They were stolen from Greece in the 19th century by, Thomas Bruce, or as Greeks call him “Lord Elgin“. Since 1836, the Greek government has fought, through diplomatic missions, for the return of the Parthenon marbles and it has been remained the most important disagreement between the two countries, Greece and the United Kingdom.
The Parthenon Marbles, or Elgin Marbles is a collection of ancient Greek sculptures that used to decorate the Parthenon and other buildings of the Acropolis in Athens. Today, they are part of a great exhibition on Ancient Greece, at the British Museum, in London, where Boris Johnson is currently Mayor.
Since Athens completed the construction of its Acropolis Museum, new petitions and new campaigns have been started to claim back the stolen marbles, that now have a home, waiting for them, in Greece.
And now, Boris Johnson, adding fuel to the fire, said “Where were the Nazis going to send the Elgin marbles? To Athens! This Clooney is advocating nothing less than the Hitlerian agenda for London’s cultural treasures.” as an answer to Clooney’s, Murray’s and Damon’s backing of the return of the marbles to Greece.
An open poll currently shows that 80% of people asked believe the marbles should be in the Acropolis Museum in Greece (Feb 12th, 2014). Efforts for their return continue, with “Bring Them Back“, currently the most prominent campaign for their return, leading the way.
Another, open, poll on the Guardian, shows that 68% of their readers agree with the return of the Marbles to Greece.
Leading political figures, internationally recognised Hellenes (Greeks) and thousands of people around the world, including actors like George Clooney have now backed the project for the return of the stolen marbles, so when Boris Johnson describes that campaign as a “Hitlerian Agenda”, he is insulting all the Greeks around the world who wish to see the marbles return home, he is insulting all the efforts of the Greek Government, Greek artists, and Greek public figures and he is proving once more, incapable of controlling what he says.
